In May, the 2010-11 NCA Professional
Development Calendar will be posted on this site. Fifteen sessions on
six topics will be held around the state. In addition, we have also
scheduled some informational and training webinars over various topics.
Administrators who want to learn more
about successfully implementing school improvement may want to join us
for the
Continuous Improvement and the
Administrator workshops that will be held
September 22nd at the IASP headquarters. Building and central office
administrators are welcome at this free session.
As you know, the NCA/AdvancED
accreditation process has changed dramatically since 2007-08. Schools
still work on their school improvement plans and document results, but
the Quality Assurance Review (QAR) teams will look at how schools are
meeting the other standards as well. These research-based standards,
drawn from a careful investigation of the effective schools studies, are
the focus of Preparing for the Quality Assurance Review
Visit
workshop.
Participants will examine these standards and learn how to self-assess
their ability to meet them in preparation for the QAR visit. Schools who
have not yet hosted a QAR visit will benefit from this free workshop.
Improving student learning seems even
more challenging in these difficult economic times.
However, that work must go on, and NCA has designed some low-cost
workshops that will assist you.
While schools are adept at collecting data and using it to place
students in programs, effectively analyzing and using data to change
instructional practice is still a struggle for many.
Data: Selecting,
Analyzing and Using It is designed to help schools and districts with those tasks.
Why is vision critical
to change and improvement?
What truly constitutes a commitment to continuous improvement in the 21st
century?
The Road to Continuous Improvement:
Vision and Commitment will explore the answers to those questions, including how to
operate more collaboratively as well as more systematically and
systemically in order to sustain the
process of improvement.
Creating a school improvement plan is
easy. Bringing those efforts
to life on a daily basis is the challenge.
Sustaining the Momentum will deal
with what to do after the Quality Assurance Review visit is over and
offer strategies to keep your school improvement efforts moving in the
right direction.
Secondary
Reading Strategies and Assessments
will focus on teaching reading in the
content areas at the secondary level. We will review research-based
strategies, the concept of K-12 literacy planning and the selection of
reading assessments. We will
also review the new Indiana Reading Framework.
This year we are presenting two types
of webinars. The first are free informational webinars. Leslie Ballard
will conduct the
KEYS Online Surveys and Tools
webinar in September for districts interested in using this
wonderful, research-based survey and the accompanying resources.
(KEYS is available to districts whose teachers are
ISTA-affiliated and whose schools are NCA-accredited.)
She will also conduct
Responding to the APR
in September
for schools who are or will be working on their Accreditation Progress
Reports.
Dr. Joyce Fulford will conduct the
Introduction to District Accreditation webinars in November to provide participants with a brief
overview of the process.
The Improving Student Learning Series webinars may be taken as a group of five or seven for a reduced cost or they can be taken individually. The Improving Student Learning Series will include:
Understanding the School Improvement Process
Planning and Implementing an Effective Plan
Sustaining the Momentum for Continuous Improvement
Progress Monitoring
Quality Tools for School Improvement
Title I and Continuous Improvement
RtI and Continuous Improvement.
A blog site will be
created for the Improving Student Learning Series Webinars so that
participants can continue to learn and exchange ideas long after the
webinar is over.
What is needed to participate in a webinar? A computer with internet access and a telephone (with speaker capability if more than one person will be participating).
