
In September 2008, AdvancED commissioned a study on the impact of the new AdvancED accreditation process on school improvement. Out of the 2,171 schools who completed their Standards Assessment Report and hosted Quality Assurance Review visits in 2007-08, 678 schools were surveyed about the degree to which their schools changed and the influence on that change that they attributed to accreditation. Twenty-five schools were then interviewed at more depth and four schools used as case studies.
In states similar to Indiana (where NCA/AdvancED accreditation is voluntary and the state accredits schools), schools perceive the greatest change and attribute that to NCA/AdvancED accreditation.
The key learning from the QAR review as reported by schools shows that the QAR visit can be anxiety producing but worthwhile and valuable to the school. From the case studies, the following conclusions have been drawn regarding the impact of accreditation on school improvement:
