ELEMENTARY, EARLY AND SPECIAL EDUCATION

CENTER FOR MATHEMATICS EDUCATION

MATH RESOURCE LIBRARY

The SMART Program
Student Math AfteR-school Thinking Program

Purpose:

(1) to creatively engage all young children in mathematical thinking and activities while giving pre-service teachers experiential learning opportunities in the teaching of mathematics in an authentic setting, and

(2) to provide free learning experiences to all children.

Significance:

The significance of the program will be seen in its benefits to all stakeholders. For elementary education pre-service teachers, it will (1) allow a meaningfully contribution to the community and a school society as they learn through service learning, and (2) cultivate social responsibility while empowering them as individuals and future teachers. This reflects ISU’s mission of providing challenging encounters with important social issues and encouraging excellence in practical and engaged liberal education for all students.

Young students from diverse cultural backgrounds and demonstrating a variety of needs will be exposed to instruction and activities that will promote their understanding of mathematical problem solving. They will encounter an integration of subjects, including writing, art, and music.

Methods:

The pre-service teachers receive all necessary content and methods in their undergraduate mathematics courses under the guidance and supervision of Dr. Marylin Leinenbach.
