ELEMENTARY, EARLY AND SPECIAL EDUCATION

CENTER FOR MATHEMATICS EDUCATION

THE ALGEBRA PROJECT

The Directors of the Center for Mathematics education (CME) at Indiana State University have designed a project to enable youth who face challenges in leaning mathematics (middle school and early high school aged students) to develop high levels of competence in the understanding and application of algebra. Nearly half a century of school improvement initiatives and significant research targeting excellence in mathematics achievement has left us with a rich legacy of brad knowledge-base of what learning in mathematics should focus on and how people learn mathematics. Clearly, this work has suggested that there is a need to rethink the approaches to teaching mathematics to early and young adolescents.

Vision

The Center for Mathematics Education envisions a plan that incorporates a strong school - university partnership. This plan brings together mathematics educators from Indiana State University and teachers from different school corporations, who will be working together to reform the instructional organization and curricular approaches of middle and high school classrooms.
