Application

Q. When should I apply to the Master’s degree program?

A. To be admitted to the fall semester for each year, applications must be received by Indiana State University by February 1st. 

Q. What is the GRE code for the institution and department?

A. The GRE institution code is 1322 and the department code for speech/language is 0620.

Q. Should I submit all application materials at the same time?

A. Yes the following should be placed into one packet: Communication Disorders Program Application, Current Resume, Letters of Recommendation, Personal Statement, Official GRE scores, Official Transcripts, List of current classes that do not appear on your transcript.

Q. When might I hear about my application?

A. Notification of acceptance will be mailed out by March 1st for the most qualified students. The entire process is typically completed by May 1st.

Admission

Q. What is your minimum GPA requirement?

A. The College of Graduate and Professional Studies recommends students have an undergraduate cumulative grade point average of 2.7 or better on a 4.0 point scale. The departmental mean GPA of admitted students for the past few years was around 3.45.

Q. What are the department’s minimum GRE scores requirements?

A. There are no set requirements; however, scores of 450 or above on both the verbal and quantitative subtests typically receive a more favorable review.

Q. Can I take the GRE more than once?

A. Yes. If the GRE is taken more than once the highest score for each section is entered into our applicant database.

Q. How many students are admitted to the Master’s program each year?

A. Approximately 15 students will be admitted to the program each year.

Q. What financial help is available?

A. Among scholarships available to students in speech and hearing are: Indiana Speech and Hearing Foundation (Exchange Clubs), Psi Iota Xi Scholarship, Walker Memorial Scholarship, Margaret Rowe Award, Hannah Schlueter Award, Cheryl Slaughter Memorial Award, and the Ringer Award. Assistantships and tuition scholarships are available for graduate students. Information on financial assistance may be obtained through the University Financial Aids Office.

Q. Why would I want to attend Indiana State University?

A. Indiana State University offers an undergraduate major in Communication Disorders that provides preparatory material and experiences for the master’s program in either speech-language pathology or audiology. At the graduate level, the students may opt for a program that leads to work in a clinic/institution setting only.

“The master’s degree (M.S./M.A.) education program in speech-language pathology at ISU is accredited by the Council of Academic Accreditation in Audiology and Speech-Language Pathology of the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association.” This assures some consistency in courses for transfer from one accredited program to another, as well as for meeting all licensing and certification standards. Required courses cover such subjects as phonetics, anatomy of the speech mechanism, articulation disorders, language development and disorders, hearing disorders, hearing testing, evaluation techniques, and aural rehabilitation. Clinical practicum experiences are available through undergraduate and graduate training and are highly integrated into the coursework. The opportunity for early, closely supervised, clinical experiences is a real plus of the program since it gives the students an early introduction to the professional world.

Q. When does the Master’s degree program begin?

A. The program begins in the fall semester. Students are not admitted in spring or summer semesters.

Q. How long will it take to complete the Master’s program?

A. Students with an undergraduate degree in communication disorders will typically complete the degree in two years.

Q. Can I attend the master’s program on a part-time basis?

A. No, It is assumed that students in the program will be enrolled in graduate classes on a full-time basis. Students will typically register for 12 credit hours per semester. Students will have 2-4 clients per semester and should be available for classes and clients every day of the work week.

Q. Is the speech and language clinic on campus?

A. Yes, the Rowe Center for Communicative Disorders in located on campus, in the garden level of University Hall. The diverse cliental provides students with opportunities to work with both individual clients and in groups and also provides a broad base of experiences. On average we provide services to 70 clients per semester.

Q. Where will I complete my clinical internships?

A. Students admitted to the program will complete two off-campus internships, a school practicum and hospital practicum. The School of Education prefers that you complete your school practicum in the state of Indiana. You are able to complete your hospital practicum anywhere in the U.S. were a qualified supervisor is available. Both of these practicums are completed during your last semester of study.

Q. How big is the department?

A. Currently there are 5 full-time faculty members along with 3 part-time faculty members. The department also has 5 faculty members working as either office or clinic personnel. In the undergraduate program there are typically 20, and approximately 30 students in the CD graduate program.

Q. What is the program completion rate?

A. Over 80% of students complete the program within two years.

Q. What is the Praxis II pass rate?

A. Around 85% of students pass the Praxis II specialty test in Speech-Language Pathology on the first attempt.
