Project PRE: Partnering to Reform Education

Faculty Professional Development & Learning Communities

The Summer 2004 Faculty Professional Development workshops entitled "Institutes for Transforming Teacher Education (ITTE)", and were the first activities for faculty held on May 10-12, May 17-19, and August 2-4. The focus of the workshops were on developing inquiry-based learning environment in teacher and general education coursework. Case teaching and problem-based learning approaches were presented. A stipend was paid to each of the 49 ISU faculty participants.

As a follow-up to the summer Faculty Professional Development, the ITTE participants and all faculty were invited to attend the academic year Learning Communities entitled “The Good Life and The Good Community” during the fall semester, 2004/2005. Faculty from across campus met during the fall/spring semester to discuss issues of importance to the Wabash Valley, develop plans for strategic projects, and develop inquiry-based learning opportunities. The topics of the four Learning Communities were “Urban Quality of Life,” “Participatory Democracy,” “Child Welfare,” and
“Migration, In and Out of the Wabash Valley.” Twenty-four faculty participated in the fall/spring Learning Communities respectively. The following faculty filled the role of leaders of the individual groups and developed topics for each discuss meeting: Gihao Weng, Geography, Geology and Anthropology, Sherry McFadden, Theater, Darlene Hantzis, College of Arts and Sciences, Rhonda Impink, Social Work, and Ann Rider, College of Arts and Sciences.

The Project PRE Action Coordinators for the Faculty Professional Development and Learning Communities were David Langley, Director, Center for Teaching and Learning, and Ann Rider, Associate Dean, Arts & Sciences.
